Salomon X Ultra 2 GTX vs XA Pro 3D GTX

Salomon is a well-known brand that is trusted by many people when it comes to trail running shoes. There are several notable Salomon models that you can consider if you are now looking for the best trail running shoes available for your budget range. In this article, we are going to discuss the comparisons between two popular Salomon models: Salomon X Ultra 2 GTX vs XA Pro 3D GTX. As you can see, both of the two models boast the Gore-Tex technology for enhanced waterproofing. So, what’s the difference between the two, and which one is the best for you?

Size and Weight
These two models are generally considered as lightweight trail running shoes. However, Salomon XA Pro 3D GTX is the slimmer and lighter one of the two. It only weighs about 385 grams, so it can be considered as a very lightweight trail running shoe. It is also somehow slimmer. Both the lighter and slimmer characteristics will allow you to run faster.

Salomon X Ultra 2 GTX is only a little bit bigger and heavier. The weight is about 410 grams. The differences are noticeable, but not enough to make a real problem. For ultra-lightweight shoes, see Salomon Speedcross 4 vs Speedcross 3.

Salomon X Ultra 2 GTX vs XA Pro 3D GTX have different soles. Salomon X Ultra 2 GTX is more of a traditional hiking shoe, featuring a thicker and chunkier sole. On the other hand, Salomon XA Pro 3D GTX is more like a training shoe, as the sole is not as rugged.

With Salomon X Ultra 2 GTX, you can expect the outer sole to provide more grip and traction. It gives very good footing, even in mud. If you are going to run through a difficult environment with lots of mud or sand, Salomon X Ultra 2 GTX will be more reliable.

On the other hand, Salomon XA Pro 3D GTX does not provide as much grip and traction. It is definitely usable for running through dry trails in the summer, as well as for work and going around the town. However, once mud is involved, the sole will get clogged much more easily and it will become more slippery.

Generally, both X Ultra 2 and XA Pro 3D are very comfortable to wear. But X Ultra 2 is a little bit more breathable. It also has slightly less heel drop.

On the other hand, XA Pro 3D features an asymmetrical lacing system with friction-free lace eyelets. It allows you to create a more precise customized fit. Pulling and adjusting the lace is also very easy and quick. Both of the two models have lace pockets for storing the laces so that they won’t get in your way or trip you.
