Getting Used to Run
We all want to have a healthy body but, there is an effort that we need to perform routinely to achieve this quality of life. Exercising and a better diet are often the keys but both are involved in your lifestyle and changing something we are used to is never easy. We need to be consistent and focus on the goal to make sure it is achieved. Running is a great way to start your active lifestyle, without having to commit to a gym membership or lots of fitness equipment.
However, running is also not the favorite of everyone and we understand that this activity can be very challenging for those who are not used to it yet. There are so many factors affecting your experience especially when you start running and all of them are related to your body both fitness and age. Typically people who are active or going to the gym 3 or 4 times a week will adapt faster to the running routine, even the vigorous one compared to people with a sedentary lifestyle.
If you are not very active on a daily basis but are still pretty young like in the 20s or 30s and have less than 10 pounds to lose, we can get used to the routine for about 2 to 3 weeks of consistent training. Just like practice makes perfect, we get better at running by adapting to the activity so a decent pace will be just fine and not stressful for you. On the other hand, older people in their late 30s or 40s and 50s may need more time to adapt.

The same if you have plenty of body fat that needs to go off, this type of runner will need more time to adapt such as between 4 to 6 weeks with consistent training before they can feel at ease. We do think keeping everything realistic is best when you start anything including running because this activity is naturally taxing so it produces quite the stress as well. It is also natural to find a friend that trains with you to progress faster or slower since we may have different conditions or preparation before.
For beginners, it is advised to not run too much and too soon because it is better to improve your overall fitness ability. We can take one day rest or do cross-training between run days such as cycling, walking, pool running, elliptical, or other typical machines at the gym. It is great to allow the body to adapt better for the stress from running; walking for example is great if you struggle a lot during the run since the body movement is very similar.
About Nike Pegasus and Asics Kayano
Now when you are ready to start the new lifestyle, it is time to prepare for everything you need. We can run almost anywhere, around the neighborhood, on the treadmill at home, at the gym, or on the trail if you prefer something more challenging. What you will need is comfortable clothing and a good pair of running shoes. The footwear is very important because it is meant to protect your feet as well as making you comfortable while running.
There are plenty of good running shoes but due to the amount we may be confused about which of them will be the better choice. Just like when you are choosing running to get used to, we should also choose the running shoes based on which seems to fit you the most. People can have different preferences when it comes to their favorite running shoes but, for starters we can shop based on the brand, budget, or who the shoes are made for.
Nike and Asics for example have some of the most popular options to consider and for those who want to have shoes that are supportive but also ideal for most runners, the Nike Pegasus and Asics Kayano are two ideal options with these qualities. Nike Pegasus is one of our favorite running shoes since it combines just enough softness and support for daily running both indoors and outdoors. The specific model we will be talking about in this comparison is Zoom Pegasus 36.
As for the Kayano, the model we are comparing is their Gel Kayano 26 which is very popular as well. It is a new addition and as expected an upgrade over the 25 that somehow comes out with a less-interesting color scheme so it was receiving quite some criticism back then. In comparison, both Nike Pegasus and Asics Kayano are similar with responsive type of ride and comfortable for long runs so they should fit on so many feet yet, we do think for a fast-paced run the Kayano is more promising.
Nike Pegasus and Asics Kayano Design
Before getting into what these shoes can offer, let’s take a look into the unit first. We understand that aesthetics is highly subjective so we will say what’s in our head instead. Both are an attractive pair of shoes but Kayano gives this robust impression while Pegasus is more streamlined and it is also easy to tell how rigid Kayano is just from the outer sole. Fashion wise they look great and we honestly have no issue about the color options or overall styling.
You will also notice that Kayano is the one with a more noticeable arch. The outer sole of Pegasus is mostly plain white and while we have no issue with it, appearance wise Kayano is coming with more colorful combinations such as the blue-black in our sample picture above. As you can expect, with this level or rigidity, Kayano is also the one with higher weight at 315 grams while the Pegasus is noticeably lighter at around 252 grams. Nike Pegasus and Asics Kayano Upper
Starting with the most important part, let’s see what Nike Pegasus and Asics Kayano can offer, especially the upper. They are comfortable but don’t feel the same at all since Kayano is quite thick and firm here. The outer layer is actually made of mesh material just like most shoes but the padding inside is different and Kayano is noticeably thicker so it may not feel as natural at first. The Pegasus on the other hand is tight enough that it can be less comfy when still new.
You will also notice that there are some parts on the internal layer padded with some reinforcement which makes the shoes should last longer or more supportive. Both are stable enough when you are running while cradling the foot but we also think that Kayano will be more forgiving if you have wider feet. In addition, the exoskeleton on this shoes along with the heel fit provides a really good fit on the collar.
Nike Pegasus and Asics Kayano Sole
Next let’s talk about the sole part of these shoes that will also affect how the ride feels like. Starting with Pegasus, these shoes come with Cushlon foam and Zoom air on both forefoot and heel respectively. The foam is special because it is made with rubber in it to make the base light but also responsive. The mechanism is similar to an air bag we put in the shoes to reduce the weight but also pad for you to land on.
The Kayano is interesting too because of the addition of gel in the heel and forefoot to improve the impact absorption, combined with a softening feeling it is a very comfy shoe to wear. This gel is easy to notice as it introduces different colors on the sole.
Nike Pegasus and Asics Kayano Experience
Lastly for the riding experience with Nike Pegasus and Asics Kayano, they are kind of similar but also different. The additional weight of Kayano makes the stride feels more powerful as well as stable compared to Pegasus but it doesn’t mean the other shoes are flimsy since this is not the case at all. The foam of Kayano feels springier however so if you are the type to add quite a pace into the run then we do think it will feel better too.
Nike Pegasus Vs Asics Kayano
Both of these running shoes are good for your everyday jog or for the gym shoes. They feel very comfortable to run with but in comparison the Pegasus is much lighter and more streamlined so it is probably more ideal for people with slim feet. The Kayano is rigid on the other hand which makes the shoes also feel more stable. The soles are rather springy and this is good to let you bounce back for speed but, for speed walking the Pegasus does feel better.
Conclusion
You can choose any of the two based on which seems to deliver the type of ride you like the most. We do like Kayano if you are going to add pace and are looking for very stable shoes but if you prefer something lighter and slimmer, we will recommend the Pegasus.
