New Balance Fresh Foam 980 Review: Supportive and Highly Forgiving Cushioning

New Balance Fresh Foam 980 makes an excellent choice for those of you who are seeking a pair of properly cushioned shoe that does not break the bank. Despite the excellent design and features, New Balance Fresh Foam 980 has been competitively priced, making it one great value for the money. It is an awesome running shoe, especially if you need extra cushioning to ease road impacts and prevent joint pain. Also, the cushioning to weight ratio is surprisingly good. The cushioning is apparently very lightweight that the shoe is not as heavy as it seemed to be. People with mild overpronation can also benefit from this shoe, thanks to the supportive nature of the Fresh Foam layer.

New Balance Fresh Foam 980 is available in various color choices and widths. Here are the color variants: Black/Blue, Black/Neon Light Blue, Grey/Silver, Grey/Yellow, Grey/Red, Grey/Green, Yellow/Blue, and White/Blue. Take a note that the Grey/Yellow model actually has a darker hue compared to the other grey models and also some blazing orange parts. The Black/Neon Light Blue model is especially sporty and elegant. New Balance has made three widths available for this shoe, which are the standard D width, 2E width (wide), and 4E width (extra wide). The D width is available for 8 – 13 US sizes.

The upper of New Balance Fresh Foam 980 is lightweight, sturdy, and supportive. It is made from synthetic leather and spacer mesh, enhanced with welded no-sew overlays. The spacer mesh is breathable, allowing for some air circulation inside.

The midsole is the best part of this shoe. New Balance Fresh Foam 980 has been equipped with the OrthoLite footbed. The footbed is very soft and comfortable. Together with the Fresh Foam layer, it attenuates and blocks away road impacts effectively. It eases the work of the joints very much. The excellent cushioning makes this running shoe suitable for heavy runners. In addition, the Fresh Foam layer also has a sophisticated geometry that creates a supportive feel. Hence, runners who mildly overpronate can benefit from this shoe as well. However, severe overpronators should try to find another shoe that is more supportive, as New Balance Fresh Foam 980 does not provide that much of support.

The outsole of New Balance Fresh Foam 980 is interestingly “plain” and “simple”. Unlike other shoes that have complex tread patterns, New Balance Fresh Foam 980 comes with a black outsole made from blown rubber material. The material provides good traction. The tread is designed with a hexagonal pattern to create the biting edges. It holds up pretty well on dry and wet roads. Unfortunately, the tread elements can wear out pretty quickly if used on demanding terrain conditions.
