Clarks Desert Boot vs Red Wing Chukka

Summer is just around the corner, and you are now looking for a pair of fashionable boots that look great and feel great. There are two popular choices that many men love: Clarks Desert Boot and Red Wing Chukka. The two models look quite similar to each other, as they each feature a two-piece construction made from a single piece of leather with the quarters sewn on the top of the vamp. However, Clarks Desert Boot maintains the traditional unlined design, whereas Red Wing Chukka comes with a leather insole. See the details on Clarks Desert Boot vs Red Wing Chukka below.

Upper Design
Clarks Desert Boot comes with a simple yet elegant design. The simplicity breathes a certain professional air around the shoe, but it is also suitable for casual occasions. Clarks Desert Boot’s upper is made from suede. The quarters are double stitched onto the vamp to ensure the strength and durability. This model has two pairs of lacing eyelets to create a comfortable fit. See the previous post about Clarks Desert Boot vs Wallabee here.

On the other hand, Red Wing Chukka has an upper that is made from the Briar Oil Slick Leather. The quarters are triple stitched, and the front part of the vamp is double stitched. So, not only the material is utterly durable, but also the stitches are incredibly sturdy. This model can easily last for a long time. There are three pairs of lacing eyelets, which create a snugger fit.

Sole Design
Historically, chukka boots are unlined. Clarks Desert Boot maintains the tradition by not using any lining. It is equipped with a crepe sole. It has a stabilizing suede-lined heel counter, which enhances the elegant look and increases the stability. The crepe sole provides decent grip and traction on various surfaces.

Although it does not have any lining, the sole feels quite comfortable. It provides good ground feel and cushioning. However, people with foot pain may want to add an insole in order to improve the support and cushioning. The sole is not very durable; it can be worn off pretty quickly.

On the other hand, Red Wing Chukka comes with an Atlas Tred outsole which has good traction. The outsole surface is textured to enhance the traction on wet roads. However, the tread pattern is not exactly deep, which means that it is also pretty easy to wear off. Still, another reason to get interested in this model is the leather insole. The leather insole feels nice and comfy.

Finally, there is some price gap between Clarks Desert Boot vs Red Wing Chukka. Clarks Desert Boot is available at a much lower price point than Red Wing Chukka. More often than not, you can get three pairs of Clarks Desert Boot for the price of a pair of Red Wing Chukka. Of course, Clarks Desert Boot is not as durable, but the significant price difference already makes it an arguably better value for the money.
