Running Shoes

Amidst pandemic like this, many people are starting to consider their lifestyle or trying new healthy habits that can improve their overall wellbeing. Running is one of them and we see many are active almost every morning. There are some people running or bicycling now which was not so often in where we live. Running and bicycling are fun activities so it is understandable that people are interested to try and it doesn’t require you to stay indoors with lots of people because they are typically done outdoors.

For running, the type of gear you will need is usually just running shoes and this is also a crucial part of the experience. The same with regular shoes, this footwear is not something universally will fit everyone and will feel comfy in all feet but more of a personal choice. With the addition of such an abundant amount of choice, it can be very confusing to select one. But, we suggest you follow your own comfort and if possible try the shoes first before committing.

Running motion may seem similar to each other but when analyzed properly, our feet can move differently and human bodies are not identical as well. Aside from the foot and shoe size, for example there are people with high arch, normal arch, and flat foot or low arch. Some people may have a wider forefoot than most of us and this affects the overall comfort of the shoes we will be choosing for running or for any footwear in general.

If separated into the type of running shoes, they can be differentiated into neutral, stability or support, guidance, motion control, and minimalist running shoes. There is also maximalist as opposed to minimalist running shoes and they are like the opposite of each other. For example if you find shoes uncomfortable for running or prefer to run barefoot, the thin minimalist is the most natural way to run while the maximalist such as Bondi 7 by Hoka and Nimbus 23 by Asics are for a more laid back and very soft running.

For most people, neutral shoes are probably the best option. If this is your first running shoes, we can try the neutral type first since they tend to suit many of us. The shoes characteristics are just balanced without any additional control or support but still have a solid amount of cushioning to prevent the feet from feeling the ground it strikes. If you know that your feet overpronate while running, the stability type with stiffer material and medial post inside the arch will help prevent the pronation. About Brooks Revel 3 and Ghost

Choosing running shoes can be a time consuming process but with a little more effort, we can get an ideal option for our style of running. If you are still unsure, do check the popular shoes for your type of running and see what people talk about them because while our feet and body are not always the same, it helps give you an insight of what the certain shoes can offer or promise. Budget wise, there are affordable and expensive options depending on how much you can spend.

Expensive shoes are not always the best, vice versa with affordable shoes but we love affordable alternatives for the value it can offer and among those many companies, Brooks is one of the most popular options as they do carry many versatile shoes in the lineup. Some of them are suitable for more laid back runners while some are great for when you need to beat the previous record. They also have some best-budget shoes that can be your daily trainer too.

For those who are looking to buy running shoes without any specific features or meant for just natural running, the Brooks Revel 3 and Ghost are two favorite models in the market. These two are often chosen by many because they seem to be comfy and ideal for daily running. We do think they are versatile too because there are no certain characteristics that will make us dislike the shoes since everything is balanced; not too plush, too firm, too shallow, or too thick.

In their current version, Revel is actually near the 5 version already which is going to be released in the next months, probably around June 2021 but the 4, and 3 version are still widely available to purchase and usually what changes in most cases are the shades and fashion itself rather than the prominent feature of the shoes. As for Ghost, the 14 version will come out this year as well and to compare the two, we will choose the Brooks Revel 3 and Ghost 13.

Brooks Revel 3 and Ghost Appearance

When seeing Brooks Revel 3 and Ghost for the first time, we do think they are the same shoes because as you can see, they are very similar to each other, especially on the shape of the upper despite both lines having different shade collections. What’s different is probably the outsole and the collar near your ankle because it seems there is reinforcement around the ankle below the neck or above its heel stabilizer. The upper material also seems a bit different or with different material.

These shoes look streamlined so we hope they are not heavy as well yet none are extremely lightweight and it is understandable with the pretty thick sole. The average weight of Ghost 13 in size 9 is about 278 grams while the Revel 3 is noticeably lighter at 250 grams for the same size. Aesthetic wise, it can be personal but we do like how Ghost looks sporty and this line also carries some of the most eye-catching colors such as mint-green, yellow, and a combination of red and yellow.

Brooks Revel 3 and Ghost Upper

Now for the most important part, let’s see what the Brooks Revel 3 and Ghost can offer, starting from the upper first. As we have mentioned above, they are made of different material and this is because the Ghost 13 is using the typical mesh fabric which is also padded to provide comfort and it is actually quite thick that you may be able to wear them during winter too. On the other hand, Revel 3 is using a knit upper so the fabric feels more robust and not as plush.

What we notice behind these materials is an ample amount of room inside but in comparison the forefoot inside of Ghost 13 is roomy so for those who often shop for a shoes a step larger, it is probably wise to tone it down a little bit or look for the narrow variant, if you dislike the feeling of excess space in the shoes. Nonetheless, the two are very comfortable and conform to the feet as we wear them more often.

Brooks Revel 3 and Ghost Sole

Next let’s talk about the sole area of Brooks Revel 3 and Ghost starting with the Ghost 13 first. This shoe is made with a dual foam setup using DNA Loft on the lateral side and BioMogo on the medial part while the foam itself are both very similar in density so we don’t have issues with balance and stability. In general the ride is more on the medium-soft which means it can handle mid-distance but since the sole is not too soft, we can still pick up the pace occasionally.

On Revel 3, the shoe is also using BioMogo DNA on the midsole so it is understandable why the feeling of lushness and firmness are almost identical to each other. Probably the upper is what makes up most of the difference in ride with these shoes because even Revel 3 also fall into the medium-soft category.

Brooks Revel 3 and Ghost Experience

Lastly on the running part, we do think the Brooks Revel 3 and Ghost are going to suit most runners who are using heel or forefoot strike. They are not overly soft nor firm but just a good balance of the two and great for mid-distance or a more laid back speed but we can still pick up the pace from time to time. The upper is what’s different since Revel 3 is narrower in the middle and firmer while the Ghost 13 is softer and roomy inside.

Brooks Revel 3 vs Ghost

Both are good running shoes but we do think you can go well with any of them since the difference is not like night and day. The sole feels are almost identical and what made up the difference is probably the upper itself. With a Flat Knit upper Revel 3 looks sturdier while the mesh fabric of Ghost 13 is more common and looks soft. If you have wide feet, the Ghost 13 can be a better option. The ride with them is comfortable and they are suitable for mid distance or just as your daily running shoes.

Conclusion

We should pick running shoes that match with the type of running itself and in comparison, we do like the Ghost 13 because the plush upper is comfy along with the thick stack. But, it is also heavier so if you prefer a lighter shoe we will recommend the Revel 3.
