Running Shoes for Better Runs

Running is great, it is one of the most popular exercises for reasons and one of them is being easy to access. It is not easy to do however because it requires effort and discipline to stick with your routine but unlike other training that may require expensive or some type of machines, running only requires you to have safe footwear for the activity. Running shoes are very common and you may need to wear one to improve the performance.

Of course there are people who prefer to not wear any shoes or barefoot but if you are running outdoors we highly advise you to wear something. This can be any footwear that is ideal for the application and comfortable to you. If you don’t have any issue about wearing one, we do recommend buying at least a pair of good running shoes. This will be a motivation too when you are reluctant to get out of the house and hit the track.

Running shoes are ideal for running because they are made for this type of application. Unlike many other shoes, the construction of running shoes is made to support your feet. Depending on what they are made for, road running shoes will have a flatter outsole while those used for trail running will be chunkier and thicker to bridge your skin and harsh surface. Especially for those running on trails, we need something that is more robust to both cover the bottom and the upper of your feet.

Running shoes also often come with dedicated foam or sole component that is supportive for running. For example, most of us are heel strikers and the shoes can be added with a certain foam or material to cushion the heel when it strikes the ground. In some models the shoes are even created to support a more natural form of running, such as those made for people with overpronation or supination. If you have certain conditions, it is wise to ask your doctor to recommend what type of shoes to wear.

For anyone without any health issues or condition, running shoes are mostly worn for protective ability and comfort. We personally love comfortable running shoes because being comfy while running allows you to run faster and for longer. It also improves the experience so mentally we are more committed to the habit. Price wise they don’t have to be expensive because you can get lots of good, affordable running shoes from so many different brands. Read also: Asics Kayano VS GT 2000 Here.

About Asics Kayano and Quantum

Just like with anything that people wear on the body, we advise to get the one that you feel the most comfortable with. If possible try the shoes at the store and do some testing while walking or running in the spot to know how they feel in application. For online shoppers make sure that the size is correct and the type of running shoes match your preference; some tend to be soft and cloudy, some are hard and some are bouncy with better response.

The choice is all yours because we have different preferences and running styles. If you already have a favorite brand, it will be much easier to find perfect shoes because usually we already like how they designed the product. Asics for example is one of the most versatile choices if you are in the market for a new running shoe. This Japanese brand is quite famous for their wide range of shoes, especially those that deliver comfort and stability.

Based on which seems to fit you the most, Asics carry a wide range of options such as Asics Kayano and Quantum. Both of them are the favorite of many and it is for good reasons. Kayano is famous for being stability shoes so it will be very supportive if you need something that can hold the feet more prominently while on the other hand Quantum is a line of neutral shoes. As expected the ride experience with the two is going to be different.

The Kayano we have today is the 26th version and you can get their newer model as well if desired but chances are the new shoes won’t be too different from their older variants. Quantum is available in a few series but the one we compare today is the 180 4 version as opposed to the 90 and 360 variant. In comparison these shoes are great for running but not exactly the same below the feet as they seem to have different sole constructions.

Asics Kayano and Quantum Design

Before getting into what the Asics Kayano and Quantum can offer, let’s take a look into the design first. Personally we like attractive shoes because they are easy on the eyes and the best part is they make us want to wear them. The style of Asics are sporty in general and most of their shoes are also very streamlined with a neat pattern. The shoes we have today are no different but they do have amazing detailing especially on the outer sole.

The look of Quantum almost makes it like trail specific running shoes for how rigid it is but Kayano is quite a chunky shoes too. The upper mesh seems to be very different so probably they decide to use different tech here. The Quantum also looks thinner on the upper and most noticeably around the collar. However, in terms of design, both are sporty and cool looking with various color schemes or combinations to consider.

Asics Kayano and Quantum Upper

Moving to the most important part, let’s see what the Asics Kayano and Quantum can offer starting from the upper part. As it has been mentioned above, the material for the upper seems to be different and while they are equally made of mesh, the Kayano uses this Jacquard and FluidFit mesh which should be flexible and adaptable. It feels tight when new but will get comfier as we get used to the fit. The mesh is very breathable as well to handle the mileage.

We are not sure what to call the mesh of Quantum but it is noticeably seamless in comparison. The knitted mesh looks really cool and it seems durable too while maintaining the structure of the shoes. The padding is not as thick compared to Kayano however so subjectively we like Kayano’s upper fit better. The collar also produces some friction and there are runners who get blisters from wearing the Quantum 180 4. In addition, the rear structure of Kayano is making the feet more stable than Quantum.

Asics Kayano and Quantum Sole

Next we want to talk about the sole unit of both shoes and they seem to be quite different here. The outsole of Quantum is made of AHAR rubber compound; same with Kayano, making these shoes great for both road and trails application. It is ideal for heel strikers while in the mid sole Quantum is using their proprietary material, called Solyte, that seems to provide a better shock absorption. It is meant to prevent the feet from making unnecessary movement.

On the other hand Kayano has a similar component too which is a lighter version of what is used in Nimbus. This Flytefoam Lite is not as good as what used in Nimbus but kind of similar and in general it is both shock absorbance while giving you that slight bounce. There is gel cushioning on Asics Kayano and Quantum meant for increased shock absorption while softening the ride.

Asics Kayano and Quantum Experience

Lastly for the riding experience, both shoes are very similar to each other, probably because the constriction is similar too but, the whole running performance is very different. The Kayano is firmer at the top meaning it is very stable at holding our feet while the sole is bouncy and gives good feedback. On the other hand the upper of Quantum is thinner and rather firm, similar to the run so while neither of them are best for long run, it is more bearable with Kayano.

Asics Kayano Vs Quantum

There are so many good running shoes out there and these two are some of the most versatile. The prominent difference is how they feel on your feet because we do think the Kayano is more stable, probably because of the reinforcement at the rear or heel. The shoes are also bouncy so it is great for fast pace running while for Quantum the feeling is more neutral while the sole is less responsive compared to Kayano.

- Synthetic-and-mesh
- Rubber sole
- SpevaFoam 45 Lasting - Employs 45 degree full length SpevaFoam 45 lasting material for a soft platform feel and improved comfort.
- I.G.S (Impact Guidance System) Technology - ASICS design philosophy that employs linked componentry to enhance the foot's natural gait from heel strike to toe-off.
- Synthetic-and-mesh
- Rubber sole
- Rearfoot and Forefoot GEL Technology Cushioning System - Attenuates shock during impact and toe-off phases, and allows movement in multiple planes as the foot transitions through the gait cycle.
- Seamless Construction - The use of seamless materials reduces the potential for irritation and friction caused by traditional stitches and seams.

Conclusion

The choice is all yours depending on which sounds more suitable for your running style. Personally we like the Kayano because it is more stable on the foot and also supportive while being flexible too, making it great for fast pace running  but versatile as well for daily training.
