Running Shoes

Running is a great exercise because it is easy to do and in most cases you will not need much gear or even a specific place to run. You can do it around the neighborhood, on a dedicated track, gym, or out there in a more challenging terrain. The options are all yours but what about the running shoes because this is one of the most important items to have when you are getting into the routine. If you ask whether running shoes are necessary, the answer will be yes.

This is because our feet will go through a simple motion known as running gait, landing on the heel, rolling the foot from heel to toe and finally, toe-off which the whole process is like putting a force between one and half and three times of the body weight. The shoes we choose for running will have two functions; one is absorbing some portion of the shock or cushioning the feet and the other one is guiding or encouraging the feet to move in a safe and efficient manner through the running gait.

Running shoes are versatile in general and often used both indoor and outdoor depending on where you want to exercise. But, it is necessary to choose running shoes for the running option because other sport shoes may not be optimized for these sequences of movements. In addition, we may end up hurting ourselves with inappropriate shoes.

When it comes to running shoes, cost becomes a point to pay attention to because there are plenty of them and not all will fall in everyone’s budget range. It is best to go for the high quality ones but they also tend to be more expensive yet, if you look closer, there will be more choices on the budget range and usually a running shoes can be as affordable as $60 for a pair and quite expensive such as the Vaporfly in our Nike Pegasus Vs Vaporfly which is up to $400 for a pair.

If you can spend the budget, the top-shelf models are usually impressive in various aspects but it doesn’t mean the affordable ones are bad options because we personally recommend to put the budget in the middle or around $100 where you will get most for the price you pay. The models and options will vary but if the newer shoes are too expensive, we can opt for the older variants because chances are the upgrade won’t be that prominent compared to the price gap.

About ASICS GT 1000 and Cumulus

If you are here then it means you are currently looking for the same type of running shoes that can give the most bang for the bucks. The running shoes in these categories are mostly ideal for various types of runners so if you are not sure, we can try and see what the market has to offer in this range. In addition, if you already have a favorite brand, it is convenient to stick with the manufacturer as chances are you may like their other series as well.

For those who want to keep the budget low and still get a reliable pair of running shoes for the training, ASICS is one of the best options you want to check out. They are prominent names in the market and known for the affordable yet good running shoes which seem to fit in many people’s lifestyle and running styles. Similar to most brands they also offer a wide range of models with new shoes coming almost every year to upgrade their older series.

This allows you not only to choose what type of running shoes to go with but also provides a range of price points. For example, people who will be running on the road or mostly spend their training on a flat surface, the ASICS GT 1000 and Cumulus will be two ideal choices to consider. Both are very popular among runners for their versatility as well as the attractive price point. But, do note that none of them will be the best running shoes out there yet probably two of the best in budget range.

People have been staying away from GT 1000 especially because this line used to be a low-cost model that you may want to avoid due to the cheap material they have been using initially yet, everything changes on the newer shoes, making the new GT 1000 a great alternative and a strong competitor for the peers from other manufacturers. Already earning good reputations from the start, the Cumulus is a very comfortable and well-made shoe while this model 21 is the best from the line.

ASICS GT 1000 and Cumulus Design

Both ASICS GT 1000 and Cumulus are available in the newest model or the model 9 and model 21 respectively as of today but you can opt for their older variant as well yet the comparison may not apply correctly as they usually put some upgrades. As you can see on the sample picture above, the two are a bit similar to each other, especially with the “A” pattern across the middle part as well as a rather thick sole which makes them very comfortable.

The upper or outer material is mesh to allow for better air circulation as well as lighter but none of them are considered as light running shoes as side by side they are still almost 300 grams for standard US 9 size, compared to expensive shoes like Vaporfly which is only 195 grams. They are very standard in terms of style and in comparison they look good whether you are running indoors or outdoors.

ASICS GT 1000 and Cumulus Upper

Now for the most important part, let’s see what ASICS GT 1000 and Cumulus can offer and starting from the upper, both of them are using the same material which is engineered mesh fused with overlays. As you can see they are not one piece so the type of fitting will be the same to most shoes with fabric that is separated in the middle and connected with a tongue. Their shoelaces are also thick and flattened to press down the fit snuggly.

What we notice different from the upper is it seems the GT 1000 tongue is just slightly longer than the Cumulus, including the collar which is also slightly taller so it will end a bit higher than your Cumulus. When fitted, these shoes are very much similar to each other and the interior is well padded to give you that plush effect.

ASICS GT 1000 and Cumulus Sole

Moving further, let’s see the sole of ASICS GT 1000 and Cumulus because this is what makes your ride more comfortable and what affects the running experience the most. In comparison, we can say that the two shoes are pretty much the same in terms of feeling and this also continues to the sole. The thing we like from a running shoe is usually comfort without being overly squishy and this is what the two offer.

Both of them are made with FlyteFoam which you can distinguish from the outside as they are printed on the sidewall. In the newest shoes these are the same, rather soft foam but, this will only be noticeable when you are running on the shoes as we need to put more force to activate these layers. When tried for walking, the two are going to give a firm impression.

ASICS GT 1000 and Cumulus Impression

The last is for comfort and do note that it is highly subjective as we do think ASICS GT 1000 and Cumulus are neutral running shoes so most people may like them but some may not. Our first complaint is a mild slippage from the tongue despite having been properly tied and secured but it is not a big problem. Personally we like the shoes as daily training as the two balance the comfort and support yet they are best on the road and other flat surfaces. Also, if you prefer very soft shoes, these two can be too firm or if you like sock type of snug, they are not going to be as light and as comfortable.

Asics GT 1000 vs Cumulus

Overall ASICS GT 1000 and Cumulus are almost like the same shoes as they have similar upper and soles but with slightly different designs. The material for upper and level of cushion as well as firmness are the same so if you like one of them chances you will also feel good with the other. The prominent difference is only mildly on the design which doesn’t affect either comfort or performance of the shoes themselves.

- I.G.S (Impact Guidance System) Technology - ASICS design philosophy that employs linked componentry to enhance the foot's natural gait from heel strike to toe-off.
- EVA Sockliner - Removable sockliner that provides cushioning performance.
- DuoMax Support System - A dual density midsole system positioned to enhance support and stability, positioned sport specifically.
- FlyteFoam Midsole Technology - Our FlyteFoam technology provides exceptional bounce back and responsiveness no matter the distance, utilizing organic super fibers to help reduce packing out that traditionally happens with softer
- DuraSponge Outsole - A blown AHAR rubber compound for enhanced cushioning and durability in the forefoot.
- I.G.S (Impact Guidance System) Technology - ASICS design philosophy that employs linked componentry to enhance the foot's natural gait from heel strike to toe-off.
- Ortholite Sockliner - Moisture management (Ortholite is a registered trademark of ATP Manufacturing LLC).
- SpevaFoam 45 Lasting - Employs 45 degree full length SpevaFoam 45 lasting material for a soft platform feel and improved comfort.

All in all it is about personal preference when it comes to running shoes but between the two we do like either and think they give the same impression. Yet, since the GT 1000 is currently cheaper, we recommend to save the budget and get these shoes for a similar level of support and comfort.
